Understanding Medicare Coverage

Original Medicare has two parts: Part A (hospital/inpatient care) and Part B (doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services). Part D covers prescription drugs through private plans. Medicare Advantage (Part C) bundles A, B, and often D through a private insurer — and may add extras like dental and vision.

What does “80/20” mean?

After you meet your Part B deductible ($257/year in 2026), Medicare typically pays 80% and you pay the remaining 20%. A Medigap (supplement) plan can cover that 20%.

When does Part A have a cost?

Part A has a $1,676 deductible per benefit period in 2026. After that, days 1–60 are fully covered. Days 61–90 have a $419/day copay. Beyond 90 days, lifetime reserve days cost $838/day.
